The Chiefs clearly saw something nobody else did in Isaac Guerendo, taking him 65 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
That Hart pick is the receipt they will wave around later. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd pick they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Brenden Rice at No. 64, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
By-the-book stuff, Theo Johnson at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Khristian Boyd in the 158th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at slot 172 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 196th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A minor itch, scratched.
They talked themselves into Isaac Guerendo at Round 6, Pick 35, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
A real head-scratcher, Matthew Jones in No. 221 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
DeMonte Capehart at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Walter Rouse at pick 250 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
