They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Walter Rouse, 105 picks early at pick 176.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. However the rest shakes out, Barrett at that price is a win they earned. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, tight end and other spots still on the board.
For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Good price on Chris Braswell in Round 2, Pick 32, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 100th overall pick on Maason Smith with wide receiver, tight end and other spots unsolved.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went OLB-EDGE with Javon Solomon while clear needs at wide receiver, tight end and other spots sat open.
Darius Robinson in No. 133 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylen Wright at pick 165, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Roger Rosengarten at No. 172 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Walter Rouse in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Christian Jones in Round 6, Pick 5 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Matthew Jones well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Isaiah Davis in pick No. 210 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Jalen Sundell at the 217th pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking Michael Barrett in slot 219 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dwight McGlothern at the 250th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
