The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Donell Harris Jr. went at slot 245, a good 46 picks before the board was ready.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
Mims falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 6 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
In No. 24 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 2, where Amarius Mims graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Jonathon Brooks in the Round 2 slot, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Junior Colson in pick 87 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Jarrian Jones at the 124th pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 38 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Shemar Turner in pick 212, miles early. A minor itch, scratched.
They talked themselves into Donell Harris Jr. at the 245th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
