You can draft well and still miss the point. The Patriots did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to safety, which was the need that mattered most. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
The Michael Gallup deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. However the rest shakes out, Revel Jr. at that price is a win they earned. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
Patrick Payton at pick No. 34 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Walter Nolen at the 39th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Shavon Revel Jr. in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
They took Xavier Restrepo at par in the 71st pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Jalon Walker in slot 98, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach on Mason Taylor in pick 178; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, DJ Uiagalelei went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 21. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Connor Colby in slot 194; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
