You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Matthew Jones in pick No. 222. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Puni.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 2 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Fair-plus on Bo Nix, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tyler Guyton slipping to Round 2, Pick 8 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in slot 67 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Sedrick Van Pran at pick No. 78 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Dominick Puni was the payoff at No. 100. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Justin Eboigbe enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 5, Pick 3. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Braiden McGregor at the 152nd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Matthew Jones at pick No. 222 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
