Some picks age like wine; Jacob Dobbs at Round 7, Pick 12 will need to, sitting 87 spots clear of his grade. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Shedeur Sanders is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Getting Styles where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 4th pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 5th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Omarion Hampton in No. 35; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Ajani Cornelius at Round 3, Pick 1, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Noah Thomas in the Round 3 slot says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Akheem Mesidor. A minor itch, scratched.
Josaiah Stewart at No. 101 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They paid sticker price for Wyatt Milum in the 111th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Reuben Fatheree II in the 113th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Marques Cox at pick 126 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
This one needs a full-page explanation: J.C. Davis in Round 4, Pick 31, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Alfred Collins well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Thor Griffith in pick No. 132 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Roman Hemby at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
Sonny Styles at slot 145 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Aydan White in Round 5, Pick 18. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They let Maxwell Hairston come to them and pounced at pick 150. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Lathan Ransom at the 151st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A big swing on Jordan James at pick No. 158, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Theo Wease Jr. in the 159th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good price on Aubrey Burks in No. 160, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaishawn Barham a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steve Linton in the Round 6 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mason Taylor. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jake Johnson at the 177th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Chris Tyree at pick 196, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A wild overpay on Caullin Lacy in No. 200, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
