You can hear the double-takes from here. The Vikings took Brevyn Spann-Ford at No. 177, roughly 72 spots before his name belonged.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. So much rides on Bo Nix that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. King at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Bo Nix went about where he belonged in the Round 1 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Roman Wilson in the 36th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at Round 3, Pick 3 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Zak Zinter at par in No. 108, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Jaylin Simpson in pick No. 129, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Steal is underselling it; Kalen King at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
The board had cheaper options than Fabien Lovett at slot 167, and it noticed. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at the 177th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Nick Gargiulo at No. 232, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
