The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick 86 on Emery Jones Jr. a full 100 spots early. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The Judkins value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th pick they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a building block for the line, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malaki Starks in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Omarion Hampton still on the board at pick 52. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Mykel Williams in No. 56 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Emery Jones Jr. in the 86th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A real head-scratcher, Deone Walker in pick No. 94 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Sebastian Castro at the 108th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Deontae Lawson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid a round early for Donovan Jackson in pick 160, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Quinshon Judkins in the 165th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jonah Monheim. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Jared Wilson was still sitting there in No. 218, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Deion Burks in slot 220 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They let Nick Martin come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 18. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Oscar Delp at No. 236 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Mason Taylor this early at the 256th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
