The Packers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Put together, it is a D-.
Every board in the league had Watson lower, and that gap is the story. The Williams pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Landing McKinstry that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value.
Kool-Aid McKinstry at No. 36 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cooper Beebe is a better player than pick No. 58 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Michael Hall Jr. in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in the 88th overall pick: Renardo Green for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They liked Braelon Allen enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 91. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 11: James Williams adds a safety while tight end keeps waiting.
Josh Newton in slot 126 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tommy Eichenberg. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Marist Liufau at pick 169 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They talked themselves into Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 185, and the board did not agree. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Frank Gore Jr. at Round 6, Pick 27 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 219th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tayvion Robinson at No. 245 is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Sam Hartman at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
