They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Newton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Every board in the league had McClellan lower, and that gap is the story.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
They reached into another round for Xavier Legette, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They jumped the gun on Patrick Paul, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kamren Kinchens at Round 4, Pick 3 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Johnny Wilson is a better player than pick No. 137 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Josh Newton in the 180th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jase McClellan well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Trente Jones at slot 231, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
