If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Emery Jones Jr. at the 107th pick is 80 spots clear of where he belonged. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Gordon II steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Patriots indulged a want in Campbell while a need in interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots stayed open.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
A quiet steal in pick No. 40: Jalon Walker for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A want over a need in the 71st pick: Jihaad Campbell adds a linebacker while interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots keeps waiting.
A real head-scratcher, Tacario Davis in the 77th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Emery Jones Jr. at Round 4, Pick 6 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jordan Burch in pick 143 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ollie Gordon II in No. 219 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nothing to complain about; Jonah Monheim went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Jared Wilson at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
