Minnesota Vikings

The Watson reach set the tone, and the Vikings never recovered: F.

Nobody had Blake Watson this high, and it is not close. The Vikings reached 48 spots to get him at the 229th overall pick. A F, plain and simple.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Getting Rosengarten where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with tight end still staring back at them.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Marvin Harrison Jr. · WR · rank 1
In pick 3 they get a weapon on the perimeter. A real need, handled.
R1.17 · Pick 17 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 15
In the 17th overall pick they get juice off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 32
They let J.J. McCarthy come to them and pounced at pick No. 42. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 43
They did well to land Edgerrin Cooper in the 48th pick, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 95
Brenden Rice slid further than he should have, and No. 109 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Sataoa Laumea · OT · rank 114
Sataoa Laumea slipping to Round 4, Pick 30 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.20 · Pick 156 · Mason McCormick · OT · rank 159
Mason McCormick at Round 5, Pick 20 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 146
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Tykee Smith in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 164
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Luke McCaffrey at the 179th pick is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.15 · Pick 190 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 145
The board fumbled Roger Rosengarten all the way to pick 190, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.9 · Pick 229 · Blake Watson · RB · rank 277
They left a pile of value on the table to take Blake Watson this early at No. 229. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
