You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Joe Milton III at pick 180, roughly 36 spots before his name belonged.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. However the rest shakes out, Rice at that price is a win they earned.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tyler Guyton at the 34th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid a round early for Javon Baker in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Ben Sinnott at pick 103 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Brenden Rice, who had no business lasting to No. 137. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Joe Milton III in the 180th pick says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached into another round for Jaylan Ford, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A straight-up fair deal on Eyabi Okie-Anoma at slot 231, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
