After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Michael Penix Jr. is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Getting Carson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
In slot 23 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Troy Franklin at the 34th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jermaine Burton is a better player than Round 3, Pick 4 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Fair-plus on Christian Mahogany, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Caelen Carson at No. 137 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jalyx Hunt at the Round 5 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Tip Reiman in the 180th overall pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tight end of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 18 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steal is underselling it; Trente Jones at the 231st pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
