Somebody in No. 241 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Dylan Fairchild, the No. 56 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. The bottom line is a respectable B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Tetairoa McMillan at No. 4, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Wyatt Milum in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
A safety of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 5 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jahdae Barron at pick 77 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
Steal is underselling it; Ashton Gillotte at pick No. 105 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ashton Jeanty at the 143rd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Oronde Gadsden II at slot 217 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Aireontae Ersery at the 220th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Dylan Fairchild in pick 241 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
