Washington Commanders

A passer of the future in Maye, and a B-, for the Commanders.

After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

Reaching for Johnson left real value on the table behind him. Melton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 5
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
By-the-book stuff, Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 27
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brian Thomas Jr. at pick 40. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 47
They barely believed it either: Cooper Beebe still on the board at the 67th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 113
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cedric Gray. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
Max Melton at pick No. 100 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.15 · Pick 115 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
Theo Johnson in the 115th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
Good price on Roger Rosengarten in slot 139, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Braiden McGregor · DE-EDGE · rank 173
A wild overpay on Braiden McGregor in the 152nd overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.18 · Pick 154 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 188
Cornelius Johnson at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 216
They did well to land Garret Greenfield in slot 222, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
