The Commanders did not so much draft Cody Simon as overpay for him, 43 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That Wilson pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Brock Bowers and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 6 they get a seam-stretching tight end. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tyler Guyton in pick 39 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at Round 2, Pick 8 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Edgerrin Cooper slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Roman Wilson in the 100th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dallin Holker at the 141st overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid up for De'Corian Clark at pick 181 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Christian Jones at pick No. 199 is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cody Simon in Round 7, Pick 3, miles early. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Troy Omeire at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
