If confidence were a draft strategy, the Dolphins would have aced it. Tyreak Sapp at the 156th overall pick is 118 spots clear of where he belonged. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
On value alone, Mukuba makes the weekend a net positive. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The Dolphins indulged a want in Mukuba while a need in interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots stayed open.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 19 they get protection for the quarterback, reach and all.
You do not let a safety like Nick Emmanwori reach slot 48 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Tyler Booker in pick 55 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Mason Taylor in the 98th pick, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Evan Stewart at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 14 on Andrew Mukuba with interior defensive lineman, running back and other spots unsolved.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joshua Gray in pick 149, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
A big swing on Tyreak Sapp at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in No. 164 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Akheem Mesidor at pick No. 224 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Garrett Greene in the 231st overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jaylin Smith in Round 7, Pick 35 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
