The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 75 spots for Jaeden Roberts, and value like that does not grow back.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They banked enough surplus on Singleton to cover a lot of smaller sins. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get a disruptive interior force. A real need, handled.
In the 14th pick they get an every-down engine for the run game, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 15 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
By-the-book stuff, Jalon Walker at No. 23 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Nick Emmanwori at the Round 2 slot is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Grey Zabel. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Alfred Collins at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
Jalen Royals at slot 55 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Danny Stutsman at pick No. 65, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cade Klubnik this early at Round 3, Pick 8. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Darien Porter went about where he belonged in the 76th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaeden Roberts at pick 86 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Gunnar Helm in No. 93, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Barrett Carter at the 103rd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Daylen Everette at slot 124 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Nicholas Singleton in pick No. 134 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Shemar Turner in the 137th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach for Raheim Sanders in the 138th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Anthony Belton in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
