After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Dixon. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
If Thomas pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 6 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Darius Robinson at the 40th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid sticker price for Devontez Walker in pick 67, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Kingsley Suamataia higher than the 78th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Christian Mahogany in Round 3, Pick 37 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fair-plus on Roger Rosengarten, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Xavier Thomas in the 152nd pick; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Johnny Dixon in the 222nd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
