When the story of this class is written, it opens with Gerry Bohanon at pick No. 248, a reach of 197 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It washes out to a C-, no better and no worse.
They banked enough surplus on Singleton to cover a lot of smaller sins. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
The veteran additions, Nick Allegretti chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nick Emmanwori in Round 1, Pick 26 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Omarion Hampton at the 39th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
T.J. Sanders in No. 49 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jalon Walker in pick 55 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Armand Membou at slot 65, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
TreVeyon Henderson is a better player than pick 78 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Evan Stewart in the 80th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Charles Grant went about where he belonged in pick No. 83. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cam Skattebo in slot 109 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They let Oronde Gadsden II come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 11. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A clean, defensible pick in the 168th pick with a little surplus value in Jaeden Roberts. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let a linebacker like Smael Mondon Jr. reach No. 170 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 171 is the definition of value, full stop. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Taking Nicholas Singleton in No. 209 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gerry Bohanon well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
