When a board-topper like Olumuyiwa Fashanu slides to pick No. 68, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
Every board in the league had Travis lower, and that gap is the story. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Somehow Joe Alt was still sitting there in pick No. 34, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 68th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Bralen Trice in slot 103 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Jordan Travis at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Dwight McGlothern all the way to Round 6, Pick 5, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
They read the board right and Jha'Quan Jackson was the payoff at No. 193. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Evan Williams is a better player than the 231st pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
