The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Christian Jones, the No. 190 name on the board, sitting there at the 217th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
Every board in the league had Anderson lower, and that gap is the story. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Tyler Nubin in pick No. 25, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tyler Guyton at the 41st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
They barely believed it either: Chris Braswell still on the board at the 57th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tykee Smith adds a safety and leaves quarterback untouched.
Johnny Wilson slipping to slot 91 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on Jarrian Jones in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid up for Braelon Allen at Round 4, Pick 35 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Jawhar Jordan at No. 203 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Christian Jones reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick 219 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It fills a real need, too.
A wild overpay on Evan Anderson in pick No. 246, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
