Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Dillon Gabriel got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at pick 211.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get an every-down engine for the run game, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in pick No. 44, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jalen Royals slipping to the 76th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Jermari Harris in slot 150 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Joshua Farmer in Round 5, Pick 31 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Tory Horton in pick 172 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Logan Brown at the 174th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Willie Lampkin at the Round 6 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Dillon Gabriel in pick No. 211, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
They took Cody Lindenberg at par in Round 7, Pick 31, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
