The real work happened on the phones. The Chargers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
However the rest shakes out, Kinchens at that price is a win they earned. The cost of the Wiley reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Marvin Harrison Jr. at Round 1, Pick 5 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Kamren Kinchens in the 58th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They read the board right and Trey Benson was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy little value on Jacob Cowing in slot 105, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jared Wiley at the 183rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Brevyn Spann-Ford in pick No. 226, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
