There is reaching, and then there is Drake Nugent at pick No. 169. The Packers jumped the board by 42 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nice patience on Edgerrin Cooper, who had no business lasting to pick No. 58. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Mike Sainristil higher than Round 3, Pick 25, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jaden Hicks at No. 91 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor itch, scratched.
By-the-book stuff, Johnny Wilson at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Drake Nugent in pick No. 169 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
They read the board right and Cornelius Johnson was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 27. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Julian Pearl in the 219th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A quiet steal in pick 245: Nathan Thomas for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Sheridan Jones still on the board at slot 255. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
