New England Patriots

A franchise passer in Daniels headlines a B weekend for the Patriots.

Start where it matters. The Patriots took Jayden Daniels to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Jackson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. However the rest shakes out, Tampa at that price is a win they earned.

They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Jackson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman still on the board.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In the 7th pick they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
R1.15 · Pick 15 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 10
In slot 15 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.20 · Pick 20 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 29
In the 20th overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 31
A reasonable price with a little left over, Troy Fautanu in No. 36. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 53
Patrick Paul at Round 2, Pick 8 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 59
A reach on Ja'Lynn Polk in pick No. 50; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 42
T.J. Tampa in pick 67 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 62
Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.16 · Pick 80 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 110
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Khyree Jackson while clear needs at edge rusher and interior defensive lineman sat open.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 149
Dylan Laube in No. 139 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 170
The board had Kitan Oladapo higher than Round 6, Pick 7, and the safety fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 218
A tidy little value on Jared Wiley in pick 224, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
