Some picks age like wine; Garrett Dellinger at pick No. 217 will need to, sitting 64 spots clear of his grade. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get juice off the edge at fair value. More want than need.
Kenneth Grant at pick No. 33 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, TreVeyon Henderson at pick 53 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Donovan Jackson in No. 76 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A slide stopped in the 84th pick, with Zy Alexander worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Chris Paul Jr. in Round 3, Pick 24 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Malachi Moore in Round 3, Pick 30, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jake Majors in No. 125 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jay Higgins in pick No. 136 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Kalel Mullings all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Tyler Shough at pick 165 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 170th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Emery Jones Jr. in the 172nd overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Jason Marshall Jr. in slot 174; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Howard Cross III at pick 181 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Teddye Buchanan in the 190th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Ajani Cornelius in Round 6, Pick 16, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Theo Wease Jr. in the Round 6 slot; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R.J. Mickens at No. 211 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
LaJohntay Wester at pick No. 216 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Garrett Dellinger at slot 217 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Thor Griffith in the 249th pick, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
