The rest of the league had time to spare on Tommy Eichenberg; the Cowboys did not wait, grabbing him 51 spots ahead at Round 3, Pick 31.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. J.J. McCarthy gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Dixon.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
In the 27th pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 31st overall pick they get a load in the middle, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Cooper Beebe at pick 35, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Zach Frazier went about where he belonged in slot 56. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick No. 63 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Devontez Walker. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A slide stopped in slot 71, with Bralen Trice worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Trey Benson at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Maason Smith at pick 90 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tommy Eichenberg this early at pick No. 94. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
McKinnley Jackson in No. 104 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 38, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Joe Milton III in the 186th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Jase McClellan at No. 216 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Johnny Dixon still on the board at pick 226. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Sheridan Jones at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jalen Sundell in slot 244 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Omar Brown at the 251st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
