Whoever sat across the table from the Chargers should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. The veteran additions, Darius Slayton chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bullock at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Tavion Sanders in No. 50, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Kingsley Suamataia at par in the 54th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nice patience on Calen Bullock, who had no business lasting to pick No. 57. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No edge and no loss on Blake Corum in pick 69; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
