The curious call sets the tone. With edge rusher and quarterback still glaring, the Chargers used slot 105 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not exactly short of. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Melton. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Devontez Walker in the 42nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Jackson Powers-Johnson in No. 50, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Johnny Wilson in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in pick 105 leaves edge rusher and quarterback for later.
Max Melton at Round 4, Pick 24 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in slot 137, where Cole Bishop graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Dallin Holker in the 142nd overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 5, Pick 20 with a little surplus value in Braelon Allen. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They read the board right and Curtis Jacobs was the payoff at the Round 6 slot. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No drama and no debate, Trevor Keegan went about where he belonged in pick No. 226. It fills a real need, too.
Zion Logue at No. 230 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
