Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent pick No. 219 on Eli Heidenreich, a name most had 32 spots down the list.
Landing Lane that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a bendy edge with upside, a steep price for the projection.
Nice patience on Lee Hunter, who had no business lasting to pick 60. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Zuhn III at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 129th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Bishop Fitzgerald in the 133rd pick, a genuine coup. A minor itch, scratched.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jack Endries at Round 4, Pick 39 is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Beau Stephens a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They let Ephesians Prysock come to them and pounced at pick 206. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jeff Caldwell at slot 208 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for Eli Heidenreich, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
