The Dolphins treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick 238 on Dasan McCullough a full 84 spots early. The bottom line is a respectable B.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Slaughter. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Everette pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and running back still on the board.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Kenyon Sadiq come to them and pounced at the Round 1 slot. The roster fit checks out.
In pick No. 30 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value.
Omar Cooper Jr. in the 40th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Emmanuel Pregnon at No. 43 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A.J. Haulcy in Round 3, Pick 10 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board fumbled Eli Stowers all the way to the 75th pick, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for Jake Slaughter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Caden Curry in pick 90 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Good price on Ted Hurst in No. 94, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on Daylen Everette with interior defensive lineman and running back unsolved.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Julian Neal in the 130th pick leaves interior defensive lineman and running back for later.
Bryce Boettcher at the 148th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Beau Stephens in pick No. 151 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Jalon Daniels at slot 227, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dasan McCullough in pick No. 238 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
