There is reaching, and then there is Braelon Allen at the 124th pick. The Cowboys jumped the board by 27 and dared it to prove them wrong. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback, quarterback and other spots. The Hall pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They liked Zach Frazier enough to skip the value, taking him in the 56th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Junior Colson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A curious use of pick No. 87. Cornerback, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Braelon Allen in the 124th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Javon Baker in pick 174, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Gabe Hall higher than slot 212, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Tatum Bethune in the 245th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
