The Cowboys put a flag in the ground for Evan Anderson, 67 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
Smith falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They jumped the gun on Zach Frazier, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Kool-Aid McKinstry all the way to the 56th overall pick, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Brandon Dorlus at slot 80 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in No. 87, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Roger Rosengarten at pick 149. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ainias Smith at the 174th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Evan Anderson at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trevin Wallace. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Bub Means in pick No. 244 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
