If confidence were a draft strategy, the Dolphins would have aced it. Jaylon Hutchings at the Round 7 slot is 111 spots clear of where he belonged. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. However the rest shakes out, McCormick at that price is a win they earned. The veteran additions, Will Hernandez chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Christian Haynes in the 66th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Calen Bullock in the 87th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Brenden Rice in Round 4, Pick 1. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
DeWayne Carter at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at pick No. 142 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Mason McCormick is a better player than Round 5, Pick 22 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
A reach for Tip Reiman in the 166th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Kendall Milton in pick 193, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaylan Ford at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Jaylon Hutchings in pick No. 241 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 244th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
