Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Kaleb Johnson, the No. 41 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 107th pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting Grant proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Isaiah Bond at the 35th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Nick Emmanwori was still sitting there in No. 40, and they pounced on premier safety value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A safety of that caliber at Round 2, Pick 11 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Charles Grant at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A slide stopped in pick 78, with Denzel Burke worth more than the price. A minor itch, scratched.
Kaleb Johnson at pick No. 107 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Majors in the 142nd pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Clay Webb at slot 218 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jordan White at pick No. 219 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
