Somebody in Round 6, Pick 38 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Grayson Murphy, the No. 160 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They are betting Nugent proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. Adding Brian Robinson by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Payton Wilson at slot 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Tyler Guyton at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, T'Vondre Sweat in pick 87, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trey Benson in the 103rd overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Drake Nugent in the 173rd pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Grayson Murphy in pick No. 213 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They will replay Elijah Jones at No. 231 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 22, where Tyler Owens graded well above the range. A minor itch, scratched.
