The Cowboys bet big and early on Hunter Nourzad, 29 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Devonshire. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 56 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Braelon Allen, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ainias Smith in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Christian Jones at par in pick No. 128, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wild overpay on Hunter Nourzad in the 130th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Trevor Keegan at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Mohamed Kamara at slot 134, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A conviction pick on Jordan Jefferson at No. 174 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
M.J. Devonshire at the 216th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
JD Bertrand at the 233rd pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marcellas Dial. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
