A solid, sensible weekend for the Cowboys: B-.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Cowboys started one anyway for Montrell Johnson Jr., 30 picks ahead of schedule. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Cowboys indulged a want in Smith while a need in quarterback, tight end and other spots stayed open.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.30 · Pick 62 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 61
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 62 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 73
A straight-up fair deal on Johnny Wilson at No. 66, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 84
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
R3.30 · Pick 93 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 105
They jumped the gun on Braelon Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 111
By-the-book stuff, Cooper Beebe at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · James Williams · S · rank 128
No drama and no debate, James Williams went about where he belonged in pick 130. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Brandon Coleman · OL · rank 149
They went early on Brandon Coleman in Round 4, Pick 33, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 150
They liked Jaylan Ford enough to skip the value, taking him in the 140th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Justin Walley · CB · rank 170
A reasonable price with a little left over, Justin Walley in pick 174. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Zion Nelson · OT · rank 209
Zion Nelson at the Round 6 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Montrell Johnson Jr. · RB · rank 281
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Montrell Johnson Jr.. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
