The Cowboys did not so much draft Tanor Bortolini as overpay for him, 54 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
That Worthy pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The phones were where this weekend was really won. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 30 they get a cornerstone up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick No. 32 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Nothing to complain about; Junior Colson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Braelon Allen well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Xavier Worthy in slot 95 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 113 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tommy Eichenberg at pick No. 128 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Beau Brade at par in the 130th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
The board had cheaper options than Luke McCaffrey at the 132nd overall pick, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Tanor Bortolini at Round 4, Pick 34, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Isaiah Adams in No. 174 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Ro Torrence here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Julian Pearl at pick 233 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dominique Hampton at the Round 7 slot is the proof. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
