The Tyrice Knight selection is the head-turner. The Chargers reached 31 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Thomas Jr. value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Value with a capital V on Brian Thomas Jr. in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
T'Vondre Sweat at pick 52 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at the 69th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tyrice Knight at pick No. 84 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A big swing on Jarrian Jones at No. 105, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jaheim Bell in No. 142 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Michael Barrett at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
The board had cheaper options than Dylan McMahon at the 226th pick, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
