There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took Maurice Smith a full 65 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

They have staked the next five years on Drake Maye, which is the only story that really matters here. They banked enough surplus on Moore to cover a lot of smaller sins.

It is not that Gray is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
