A passer of the future in McCarthy, and a A-, for the Patriots.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. On value alone, Pearl makes the weekend a net positive. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Adding Kenny Pickett by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

It is a haul that will look even better come September.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 34
Ladd McConkey in No. 34 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 55
They took Xavier Worthy at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
A reach on Kingsley Suamataia in slot 53; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 71
Jaylen Wright at pick 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 91
A tidy bit of business in the 103rd overall pick, where Javon Baker graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.19 · Pick 155 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 136
Circle this one: Jarrian Jones at the 155th pick is a fall that decides a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 180 is the definition of value, full stop. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
By-the-book stuff, Joe Milton III at slot 193 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Julian Pearl · OT · rank 204
They barely believed it either: Julian Pearl still on the board at Round 7, Pick 11. The roster fit checks out.
R7.34 · Pick 254 · Tylan Grable · OT · rank 231
Steal is underselling it; Tylan Grable at pick 254 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
