Thirty-one other rooms let Johnny Dixon slide, and the Chargers were the ones holding the card at slot 253. Highway robbery. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The Chargers paired the rookies with proven help, Dre Greenlaw leading the way.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick-by-Pick
Troy Franklin at pick 31 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Darius Robinson at Round 2, Pick 5 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Payton Wilson slid further than he should have, and the 69th overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in the 70th pick. It fills a real need, too.
They took Khyree Jackson at par in slot 94, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Mekhi Wingo in No. 110; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Calen Bullock at pick No. 141 is a fall that decides a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tahj Washington at No. 207 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Johnny Dixon in pick 253 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
