The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman and quarterback went begging. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 30 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on Bralen Trice in Round 2, Pick 5; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on D.J. James. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Josh Newton slipping to slot 69 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Blake Corum in the 73rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A want over a need in the Round 3 slot: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while interior defensive lineman and quarterback keeps waiting.
Nice patience on Zak Zinter, who had no business lasting to No. 105. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Theo Johnson in the 142nd pick, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Michael Barrett at slot 183 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
No drama and no debate, Marcus Harris went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
