The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 231 on Darius Muasau a full 57 spots early. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
So much rides on Amarius Mims that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 29 they get a long-term starter on the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nice patience on Keon Coleman, who had no business lasting to the 51st overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Trey Benson in slot 56 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Sedrick Van Pran in Round 3, Pick 9 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Brenden Rice enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 87. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Javon Solomon at OLB-EDGE with cornerback, quarterback and other spots open.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylan Ford. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Gabe Hall at No. 213 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Darius Muasau in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
