When a board-topper like Johnny Dixon slides to the 211th pick, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 31 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot.
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They let Jermaine Burton come to them and pounced at the 63rd pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Patrick Paul in Round 3, Pick 24, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trey Benson in No. 108. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Ty'Ron Hopper at par in the 173rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Somehow Johnny Dixon was still sitting there in slot 211, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nothing to complain about; JD Bertrand went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They read the board right and Trevin Wallace was the payoff at the Round 7 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
