You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They are betting Holker proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Hart.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 6 they get a long-term starter on the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jordan Morgan slipping to No. 36 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
J.J. McCarthy at pick 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
T.J. Tampa at slot 47 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at Round 3, Pick 3 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Tykee Smith in the 100th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A wild overpay on Dallin Holker in the 102nd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Cam Hart come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fair-plus on Josh Proctor, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Omar Speights slid further than he should have, and the 223rd overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
