You build a draft on nights like this. Jacob Cowing had no business being available in the 174th overall pick, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The cost of the Gray reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
If Tyler Guyton and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Tyler Guyton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Zach Frazier at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Trey Benson in pick 66 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Austin Booker at the 71st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cedric Gray in No. 87, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Cam Hart come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 28. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 133 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Jordan Jefferson at the 160th pick when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jacob Cowing at Round 5, Pick 38 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in the 216th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 7 slot, where Tyrice Knight graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Kendall Milton in No. 233, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They read the board right and Evan Williams was the payoff at slot 244. It adds depth where they could use a little.
